Ken Fischer, boutique amp guru extraordinaire, has written extensively about all the virtues of a real class-A tube amp. True class-A architecture results in a faster response time with more dynamics whether you are playing clean or over-driven. Furthermore, you get a more accurate sound with greater note separation and even order harmonics. Most amps on the market today are a push-pull design running class A/B. Costs are higher to make a true class-A power amp with their much larger transformers and other heavy-duty parts.
Since tube amps sound best when cranked up, unless you play stadium gigs it makes no sense to take a high wattage amp to perform in a club. If your power tubes aren’t pushed to at least 60% of capacity then you are missing most of the rich harmonic content lurking in your amp. So, how much tube power do you need in a band to be heard over the drums? After extensive testing, we have found that 10 class-A watts through an efficient 2x12 or 4x12 cabinet will easily cut through the mix and furthermore, most venues demand that you turn down so they can control the P.A. house mix. One solution with a high-powered amp is to use a power brake, hot plate, or other similar attenuator and that kills your tone quality.
Introducing the MegaTone answer! Consider our line of meticulously constructed and beautifully engineered, old school 10-watt guitar amps you can crank up with reckless abandon; and with features you won’t find anywhere else. Rugged point-to-point construction is far superior to mass produced circuit boards because it securely puts the components where they sound the best and are most stable with the least amount of noise. We use only top quality components, featuring custom made transformers, Sprague-Atom capacitors, carbon comp resistors, and silver Teflon wire. Sometimes 10 watts is too much so we include voltage-scaling technology to lower power output, without altering the tone. Most models have a full-featured tube driven effects loop with controls for input/output level with a switch for pedal signal level or rack types that use line level. You also have the option of a series or parallel signal path. Our robust power supplies are dead quiet, include a real ground lift switch, and you can experiment with a wide variety of power tubes.
Bottom line is unique all tube guitar amps made by hand, one at a time, by compulsive perfectionists in the heart of North Carolina. We back all this up with a simple 10 year warranty. If you are a musician with a critical ear who has no need to hide behind a wall of mushy unfocused distortion – we have what you have been searching for. Welcome!
